What is an engineered stone benchtop?
Engineered stone (also called manufactured or composite stone) is made by mixing crushed minerals with a binder resin, then pressing and curing it into slabs. Compared with natural stone, engineered surfaces give you a more consistent pattern, a tighter choice of thicknesses, and usually lower maintenance.
The catch has always been the binder and the mineral content. Traditional engineered stone is typically around 90% crystalline silica — the dust from cutting it is what triggered Australia's nationwide safety response.
What changed after the silica ban?
From 2024, Australia moved to prohibit the import, manufacture and supply of engineered stone containing more than 1% crystalline silica. That ruling did not remove engineered stone from the market — it split the category in two:
- Legacy engineered stone with high crystalline silica content, which is being phased out of supply.
- New-generation silica-free surfaces, engineered without crystalline silica, which remain fully available.

How engineered stone compares with natural marble and terrazzo
There is no single "best" benchtop material — the right choice depends on how the surface is used and the look you are after.
- Engineered (silica-free) — most consistent pattern, lowest maintenance, best for busy family kitchens and high-turnover commercial spaces.
- Natural marble — every slab is unique. Marble suits statement kitchens, vanities and feature walls, and needs occasional sealing.
- High-density terrazzo — dense, durable and heavily patterned. Popular for cafés, retail fitouts and contemporary homes.
What does an engineered stone benchtop cost in Sydney?
Cost depends on three things: the slab you choose, the thickness, and the amount of cutting and edge work your design needs. Is engineered stone still legal in Australia?
Yes — engineered stone itself has not been banned. What is prohibited is the supply of engineered stone containing more than 1% crystalline silica. Silica-free engineered surfaces such as ZERO Mineral Surface remain available.
Is engineered stone better than natural marble?
They suit different jobs. Engineered stone offers a more consistent pattern and lower maintenance; natural marble offers one-of-a-kind veining and a premium look but needs sealing. Many Sydney projects use both — for example a silica-free engineered perimeter benchtop with a marble island.
How thick should a benchtop be?
20mm is the standard for residential benchtops and is what most of our slab stock is cut from. Thicker profile edges can be built up during fabrication if you want a chunkier look.
