The Specifier's Guide: Choosing Stone for Sydney Commercial & Multi-Res Projects

What architects and shopfitters actually ask us — and what they should

Specifying stone for commercial work is a different discipline from residential: lead times that can't slip, quantities that must match across floors, finishes that survive ten years of public traffic, and documentation that stands behind all of it. This is the specifier's briefing — built from our Sydney supply desk, for the people who sign the schedules.

The four questions every commercial spec should answer

1. Slab consistency at quantity. A hospitality floor is 40+ slabs that must read as one surface. Natural marble varies by block — gorgeous in a home, a coordination risk at scale. This is why commercial work gravitates to high-density terrazzo and ZERO mineral surface: batched consistency, repeatable supply, and — decisive for multi-site rollouts — the ability to order matching stone twelve months later as the fitout programme expands.

2. Finish performance under public traffic. Hospitality floors take chair drag, heel strikes, cleaning chemicals and spilled everything. Specified correctly, high-density terrazzo holds its polish where softer surfaces haze; REALMATTE™ mineral surfaces hide micro-wear at counters and bars that gloss finishes broadcast. The spec line that matters: finish, not just material.

3. Fabrication scope and liability. Commercial stone work fails in the gaps between suppliers — slab from one, fabrication from another, install from a third, and a defect nobody owns. Our commercial quotes are supply-fabricate-install from the Rydalmere facility: one schedule, one warranty, one number the builder can hold.

4. Documentation. Forthcoming: full material data, sealant specs, care schedules for facility managers, and — increasingly requested — silica-safety compliance records for the ZERO mineral surface category post-ban. If your project needs it documented, ask; we keep it on file.

Where each material earns its commercial keep

  • Hospitality floors and bars: high-density terrazzo — the polish holds under tray traffic, and the chip palette can be matched to brand colours (we've spec'd terrazzo to brand guidelines more than once)
  • Retail counters and display plinths: ZERO mineral surface with REALMATTE™ — matte counters stay fingerprint-reasonable under constant public touching, and consistent batches keep multi-store rollouts identical
  • Lobbies and statement walls: bookmatched marble — no manufactured surface has matched it for arrival impact, and a lobby isn't a traffic zone in the same sense as a café floor
  • Bathrooms and amenities: natural marble and sealed marble — low-acid environments where natural stone delivers hotel-grade calm at accessible quantities

Lead times and programme — the honest version

Sydney commercial stone, template to installed: standard mineral surface and terrazzo programmes run comfortably inside fitout schedules when templating is booked against the cabinetry programme. The risk in every stone programme is late templating — stone can't measure a plan. The specifier's protection: engage stone early, reserve slabs on approval, and lock the template date to cabinet completion. We hold reserved commercial stock at Rydalmere precisely so programme slips don't become stone slips.

Trade terms

Wholesale schedules for builders and developers, project supply agreements for staged rollouts, and specifier sample kits for design phases — couriered, with slab images and batch data.
