What Is Zero Silica Engineered Stone? The Complete 2026 Guide

The stone industry changed overnight — here's what replaced it

On 1 July 2024, Australia became the first country in the world to ban engineered stone benchtops containing crystalline silica. Overnight, the product that had dominated Australian kitchens for two decades was gone. Kitchens half-specified had to be redesigned. Builders scrambled. And homeowners started asking a question that still hasn't stopped: "So what do I use now?"

The short answer is ZERO silica mineral surface — the category engineered specifically to replace the banned product. But most explanations stop at "it's silica-free", which tells you almost nothing. Here's what actually matters.

What "zero silica" actually means

Traditional engineered stone was roughly 90% crushed quartz bound with resin — and that quartz was the problem. When fabricators cut, ground or polished it, the released crystalline silica dust caused silicosis, an irreversible lung disease. The danger wasn't in the finished benchtop on your kitchen. It was in the workshop.

ZERO silica mineral surface removes crystalline silica from the equation entirely. Instead of quartz, it's built from mineral fillers — the same family of chemistry, the same kind of slab, the same fabrication workflow, but with a formulation that doesn't generate silica dust when worked. Fabricators can cut it without the deadly exposure. That's the entire point.

How it performs in a real kitchen

This is where the category has genuinely moved on from the old quartz. Modern ZERO mineral surfaces deliver:

  • Heat resistance well beyond old engineered stone — a hot pan taken straight from the cooktop won't scorch the resin the way it could on quartz
  • Non-porous performance — coffee, turmeric, red wine and beetroot sit on the surface without wicking in, because there's almost nothing to wick into
  • Consistent patterning — because the slab is manufactured, book-matching and repeat slabs are reliable in a way natural stone can never promise
  • Matte finishes that stay matte — including our REALMATTE™ finish, which we'll come back to

What it doesn't do

Honest answer: it doesn't pretend to be natural stone. Under close light, a mineral surface has a more uniform structure than marble — no crystalline veins, no geological history in the slab. Some people love that consistency. Some people only ever want the real thing. Both are valid, and it's why we stock both: natural marble and ZERO mineral surface side by side in the same showroom.

The cost picture in Sydney

ZERO mineral surface typically lands between porcelain and premium natural marble on price — and away from the bottom of the range. The slab is one part; templating, fabrication and installation are the rest. Because we supply, fabricate and install from our own Sydney facility, trade customers get one number that covers the whole job rather than three quotes that blame each other.

The REALMATTE™ difference

One thing worth knowing: nearly all matte "stone-look" surfaces on the market are actually high-gloss slabs that have been surface-treated to look matte — and that treatment can wear or gloss up over years of use. REALMATTE™ is different. It's a matte finish engineered into the surface itself, so the look doesn't degrade, and it resists fingerprints and watermarking in a way treated-matte surfaces don't. If you've ever wiped a black benchtop forty times a day, you'll understand why that matters.

Is it right for you?

Choose ZERO mineral surface if you want: the safest possible product for everyone who touches it, high practical durability, consistent supply for multi-unit projects, and a premium matte aesthetic without natural stone's maintenance. Choose natural marble if you want geological character no factory can reproduce — and you're happy to treat it accordingly.
